Humanoid Joint Modules – OEL-HJ series

Fully integrated joint packages for humanoid, collaborative and quadruped robotics - combining frameless motor, reducer, CDH driver, hollow encoder and brake in a single sealed housing. Economy HJ1 and standard HJ2 tiers, three form factors (flat, tall, collaborative), four reducer families (harmonic, RV, planetary, direct).

OEL humanoid joint module - sectioned view

Integrated joint stack

  • Frameless motor - FM1 economy or FM2 ultra-high-density
  • Reducer - harmonic (HJ2T), RV (HRV2) or planetary (HP2); ratios 15:1 through 161:1
  • Driver - CDH circular driver, 24 V / 48 V bus, EtherCAT or CAN
  • Encoder - 16 / 17 / 19-bit hollow encoder, single or multi-turn
  • Brake - permanent-magnet holding brake, or brake-free option

Why you want it as a module: mechanical and electrical integration pre-validated, thermal path managed end-to-end, wiring simplified to power + bus, and the whole joint is serviceable as a unit.

Form factors and reducer options

Form F – flat

Flat (F) form factor

Short axial length, wide OD. Ideal for low-profile hip, waist and yaw joints on humanoid robots. OD 40 - 170 mm.

Form H – tall

Tall (H) form factor

Longer axial profile. Fits into upper-arm and shoulder positions where radial space is constrained.

Form T – collab

Collaborative (T) form factor

Cobot-optimized profile with integrated torque sensing capability. For safety-rated human-robot collaborative arms.

HJ2T – harmonic

Harmonic reducer, ratios 15:1 - 161:1 depending on frame. Best for the highest precision and lowest backlash.

HRV2 – RV

RV cycloidal reducer. Higher shock-load capacity, best for the base and shoulder joints that carry the whole payload.

HP2 – planetary

Planetary reducer, cost-efficient, broad ratio range. Good all-rounder for elbow, wrist and finger joints.

Part-number naming convention

Every OEL motor and drive encodes its configuration in a deterministic part number so you can quote and order precisely. Pick once, reorder forever.

Example: AC Servo Motor

OEL-ASM08010H2E1M17E23 → Overland Engineering and Logistics → AC Servo Motor → 80 mm frame → 10 (1000 W) → H2 (220 V) → E (with brake) → 1 (AMP linear cable) → M17 (17-bit magnetic encoder) + E23 (23-bit optical encoder option).

Frequently asked

Both. You can buy any item in the catalog standalone - motor, drive, encoder, reducer - and integrate them yourself. We also sell pre-integrated packages (HJ joint modules include motor + reducer + drive + encoder + brake in a single sealed unit) for customers who want to skip the mechanical and electrical integration work.

FM1 is the cost-optimized economy series - ideal for high-volume applications where the unit cost matters most. FM2 is the ultra-high-density series, delivering roughly 10 % more rated torque in the same stator diameter and roughly 20 % less motor loss, at a higher unit price. Pick FM2 when continuous-duty thermal budget is tight (cordless battery-powered joints) or when you need every bit of torque density from the envelope.

Yes. Custom windings (different voltage or KV constant), custom shafts (longer, shorter, keyed, threaded), custom flange patterns, custom cabling, stainless or nickel plating, and private-label stamping are all routine. Typical custom lead time 4 - 8 weeks from approved drawing. No minimum order quantity for custom prototypes.

CDH circular drives support EtherCAT (CiA 402 profile) and CANopen natively. Additional drives in the catalog support RS-485 / Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and step/direction pulse control. Specify the protocol in your RFQ and we'll point you at the matched drive.

Yes - that is a core program for us. Typical engagement is: you share your joint-stack requirements (torque, speed, OD envelope, axial length, voltage, comms, brake requirement), we reply with a recommended HJ1 or HJ2 configuration and a first-article lead time. Prototypes are validated in-house before the production order, and we hold the spec on file for repeat orders at no re-engineering charge.

Standard catalog motors (OEL-ASM, OEL-DSM, TEC-series BLDC, GMP gear motors) typically ship in 3 - 4 weeks for off-the-shelf configurations. Frameless FM1 / FM2 motors with standard windings ship in 4 - 6 weeks. Humanoid joint modules with custom reducer ratios or encoder options typically run 6 - 10 weeks for the first article. Volume programs run on their own schedule - quoted with the program.

Yes. Standard motors carry CE marking (EN 61800-3 EMC, EN 61800-5-1 safety) and UL recognition / listing in the relevant power classes. Automotive programs run under IATF 16949:2016 with PPAP support. Specify the certification package you need in the RFQ.
